Each year at Madden’s we send off the season with a closing party. This year is our 82nd annual closing party – what a tradition!! The closing party is a weekend of fine food and wine geared toward adults. Imagine yourself enjoying a cool night sitting around a bonfire each evening.

Confessions of an Assistant Event Coordinator

Most guests don’t realize how much work is done “behind the scenes” to prepare for groups of guests coming into the resort.  Most of the behind the scenes stuff that I deal with is for corporate meetings and conferences. We coordinate everything from where the group will stay on the resort to what kind of beverages are served during their functions.  Functions usually include, but are not limited too, meetings, social receptions, dinners, award ceremonies, team building, recreation, and of course golf! Keep checking in on our blog as I plan to write about some of the fun behind the scenes things I help Madden’s Event Coordinators with.

Madden’s does do several weddings in the summer that I help plan as well: we usually average 7-10 weddings a season.  And with weddings the work can be surprising; we really never know if we’ll be doing basic planning tasks, like seating charts and menu assignments or if we’ll be hanging paper lanterns and setting up centerpieces. I have assisted with 5 weddings this season, all of which were beautiful, but as different as night and day! More to come on that in another post!

One of the most important things I have learned about the hospitality industry in my short time in this position is that the small details tend to be the ones that please guests most.  In a world where many other hospitality businesses have thrown detailing out the window, offering sloppy service with little room for flexibility, I am incredibly proud to be an employee at Madden’s: a place where everyone understands that cutting corners
is not the way to our guest’s hearts!

As Ever, Sarah Schultz

Camp Confidence’s Fishing & Golf Classic

This weekend is a big one for Camp Confidence, and Madden’s for that matter! Camp Confidence will hold two fundraisers back-to-back.

Camp Confidence: “We provide a year-round opportunity, facility, and professional staff for persons with developmental disabilities. We enhance the ability and self-confidence of people of all ages with developmental disabilities, with particular emphasis on persons with mental retardation, wherever they may be. We educate through ‘hands-on’ outdoor and recreational experiences while meeting individual needs” –

First, on Friday June 17, Camp Confidence will host the Classic Golf Tournament at Madden’s Classic course.

Second, on Saturday June 18, Camp Confidence will host its 28th annual Fishing Classic. The competition will be held on Gull Lake with weigh in taking place at Madden’s on Gull Lake.

We hope you will join us at Madden’s to celebrate both Camp Confidence and Father’s Day this weekend.

Celtic Festival at St. Mathias Farm

The Farm on St. Mathias will host their 3rd annual Celtic Festival on June 25, 2011. The family event will run from 10 am until 4 pm. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children. A price worth paying!

I wanted to provide a list of some of the fun activties that will take place at Celtic Fest this year, but The Farm at St. Mathias has already done is so well. Here is quotation from their newsletter about the upcoming event:

“We are working diligently to bring the events of the Celtic Festival for 2011 together.  Again, this event will be held Saturday, June 25, 2011.  We continue to take interest in vendor participation and are finding them fast.  However, if you are or know someone who is interested, please have them contact us.  The lineup of music will be much varied this year with more than one act, dancers, storytellers and more. Our lineup will include sheep shearing, spinning, dying of wool and weaving.  We will also have blacksmithing and metalsmithing demonstrations.  We are working on a stonecutter as well.  We would like to think of it as a Cultural Festival — a mix of music, dance and artesian Celtic crafts.  We have also secured the partnering with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which will be held in Brainerd the same day.  Our plan would be to offer a percentage of the gate fee to the cause for all folks who show up for the green wearing their pink.  Please spread the word.”

To become a vendor or for more information, call 1-888-404-5009.

**The Farm on St. Mathias is an organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) garden. Visit their website to learn more about CSA gardens. Especially interesting for those new to the term CSA is this video.**

Until next time, Elizabeth
